My idea for the show, ‘YouPlay’:
Dear Interactive TV, my name is Milly Andrews-Carlo, I have read your letter and I am extremely excited to share my idea for the new game show with you. The game show idea I have come up with is of course, interactive and will be fun and interesting for everyone watching/playing, I really do hope that you will like my idea and that it can work for your company.
Engaging hosts
An engaging host helps the show to appeal to its audience because if the host is a relatable person the audience will feel as though they are more involved in the show and will enjoy it more. If the host is engaging they will be able to draw the audience in to watching it which is effective because it means that the game show will become more popular, so I have come up with three case studies with relatable and interesting celebrities who can host the show.
For my case studies, I chose the game shows, Total Wipeout, Take Me Out and 500 Questions. Total Wipeout is hosted by Richard Hammond who is a presenter, journalist and writer, he is best known for co-hosting the show ‘Top Gear’ (2002-2015). Richard is 46 years old and is married with two children, he is a relatable person because not only is he a celebrity but he is also a father and can act as though he isn’t famous at all with the way he dresses casually and makes jokes on television. People find him to be quite a funny person, he has a large element of humour in the way he presents and the things he says. This is a good thing because the audience will like watching him as they won’t get bored and it will put them in a good mood.
The show Take Me Out is hosted by Paddy McGuinnes, who is a comedian as well as a presenter so for the show he makes a lot of jokes and makes the contestants and the audience laugh. Paddy is 43 years old and is best known for hosting the show ‘Benchmark’, he is married to Penelope Patricia who have two children together. He is engaging because he creates a happy atmosphere, if the host for the show was quite a serious and strict person it wouldn’t be as good because the feeling of the show wouldn’t make people want to watch it. As Paddy is very funny, he engages the audience as it makes them feel more involved with the show.
The host for 500 Questions is Giles Coren, he isn’t a particularly funny person, he is more serious and smart. However, he still engages the audience because the show doesn’t have to have an element of humour, it is more about the questions than the actual contestants. He presents the questions well and isn’t too serious that he makes the show boring, he also makes the audience understand the show more because he is very good at explaining the format etc. which is what the audience needs otherwise they could get confused and become bored and uninterested. Giles
is 47 and is married to Esther Walker, he is well known for being a restaurant critic for the ‘Times’ and for being in the show ‘Million Dollar Critic.’ He dresses in a smart way to show he is an intelligent man, it also shows he has some authority as he is the host of the show so is quite important.
Standing out USP
Each game show has a USP so that they are different from other shows. They all have them because otherwise the shows would be the same as each other making them boring for the audience as they wouldn’t stand out to them. For the show ‘YouPlay’ it’s USP is that it is interactive which makes it a lot more interesting than other shows and will make it more popular with the audience. My three case studies all have different USP’s as well, which makes them stand out.
For example, Total Wipeout is about the contestants getting through an obstacle course in the quickest time they can, if they get through all of the rounds they get into the finals, there is three people who get through and they once again compete against each other, the person who completes the final round in the least amount of time wins £10,000. This is a very unique game show because instead of the contestants having to answer multiple questions to win a prize they actually have to do something physical. This is really effective because it means that the audience will want to watch it more than other game shows as it is different which makes it more exciting.
Take Me Out on the other hand is different also, it isn’t anything physical but it isn’t answering questions either. The aim for each of the contestants is to come out of the show with a date. There are 30 women who are on the stage, they each stand behind a desk which has their name on and a light, a man is then brought down onto the stage via a lift and if the women like him they keep their light on and if they don’t they turn it off. The man then has to show them all a video of himself telling them a bit about him such as his hobbies or his job, then the man gets to decide if he wants to perform a talent such as dancing or show another video with his friends and family speaking about him. After the man does all of this he gets to choose two of them women left with their lights on and asks them a question about themselves, he then picks one of them and takes them on a date. This is a different sort of game show because it is about dating and not many game shows are in this genre, also there isn’t an overall prize it is completely about finding a date and as this is so different the audience will like it more.
Finally, 500 Questions is a quiz show, there are lots of these types of game shows on TV all over the world because they are popular with a lot of people. However, quiz shows aren’t always original as they are just about asking the contestants questions and them getting a prize but 500 Questions is unique from others. The format of the
show is that there are two contestants who each have to answer 50 questions, they get to choose a category that they want to answer the questions from and every time they get one right they win a lot of money. If they get three questions wrong in a row they get three red crosses and they are out of the game and have to go home with no money, the other contestant is then up for answering questions and gets all the money that the other contestant earned. Another person is brought in to play against the other contestant and whoever wins gets to keep all of the money. This is different from other quiz shows because the contestants get to pick their own category and there are three crosses involved, so the format of the show is different from the normal game shows.
Drama and excitement
Each show has to include at least some drama and excitement to make engage the audience otherwise the show will always be exactly the same as the last one just with different people. Total Wipeout is exciting overall because each contestant has to get through obstacles which has a big element of humour about it so that the audience will never get bored. There is rarely any drama in the show but if there is then it is normally an argument between the contestants, however it doesn’t matter that the show doesn’t have a lot of drama because it has excitement all the way through.
Take Me Out has excitement and drama, it’s exciting because it creates anticipation for the audience of who each man will choose and what they will be like, it’s also exciting because at the end of each episode the audience gets shown if the couple stayed together and how they got on with their date, which the audience likes because it’s as if you get to see something from behind the scenes. There isn’t normally drama on the show but contestants can sometimes get competitive about being picked and could have an argument with one of the other contestants.
Finally, in 500 questions there is more excitement than drama because the contestants aren’t normally loud or rude. The exciting thing about the show is if a person gets a cross because it creates a tense atmosphere for not only the contestants but for the audience as they have to see if the contestant gets sent home in the next question. Quiz shows aren’t normally the most exciting type of game show because it’s just people answering questions but for 500 Questions it has more excitement as it is different.
Pitch
The niche audience group that I am aiming the game show for are people who are aged 15-50 and can be male or female. I have chosen this niche audience because a lot of people at these ages use their mobile phones and digital devices loads, they
are always carrying them everywhere they go and downloading new apps and social media sites, so I thought that this would be a perfect show for them to interact with. I also chose this age group because people of a younger age don’t have mobile phones as they are too young or they just won’t understand the questions from the show which would make it boring for them.
For the show, I think the set should be made up of colours such as red and blue because red represents power which is what the audience will have a lot of as they can interact with the show and because blue represents relaxation which the audience will be able to do as they can play along with the show in the comfort of their own home. I want there to be a round stage and two desks facing each other for the contestants to stand behind which will have their names on and their score. There needs to be a big screen in front of the stage for all of the answers from the audience to appear on, and there needs to be at least 5 rows of seats next to the stage for anyone who wants to come and see the show live.
The gameplay of the show is quite simple, there are two contestants who go onto the stage and face each other, they are both asked questions in turns, for every question they get right they earn a point and for every question they don’t get right they lose a point. If either of the contestants get stuck on a question they can choose to go to the audience. The people watching the show via the app then get to send in their answer to the question, the 5 most popular answers get sent to the show where the contestant can then choose one or just come up with their own. If the contestant chooses an answer from the audience, all of the people who submitted that answer into the show win a prize which can be things like discounts from shops or restaurants or some money etc. they will also win 1 point each and if they win the most amount of points in the month then they will get a big prize such as £100. The contestant who wins the most amount of points out of the two of them wins a big prize as well which is £1,000 and this then ends the episode.
The host for the show will be Holly Willoughby because she is very well known especially by the niche audience because she has presented shows like Meet the parents, Play to the whistle, and This morning which are all very popular. The shows that she has presented are also a range of different genres which will be effective for the game show because it means that the different people from the niche audience will like her and will find the show better with her in it. The contestants will be from the general public so that everyone from anywhere can have a go at it and play along at home as well, but there could be a celebrity special once a year at Christmas for example, to raise money for a chosen charity.
The show should be scheduled on TV at 7pm every Thursday as this is a time where most people are home from work and school and if they aren’t they could be
travelling home on public transport which means they are still able to interact with the show via the app. It is also a good time because most people are relaxing at this time of day and they are normally watching TV which means they will want to watch the game show then.
Interacting
One way that the audience could interact with the game show YouPlay is via an app. Each person would sign up for the free app and when the game show is on TV the questions will appear on the app and the audience can send their answers in to the show for the contestant to pick from if it becomes one of the 5 most popular answers.
Another way that the audience could interact with the show is via the website, it could allow them to send answers in online instead of the app. On the website, there could also be old episodes and clips from the show to make it more interesting.
And finally, another idea about how the audience can interact with the show is via text messages, it would work in the same way as both the website and the app, you just send your answers in over text.
An advantage for the app is that the questions will appear onto your screen as soon as they come onto TV so you won’t miss any of them, it is also very easy to use, the website will also be a good way for the audience to interact because you can access it anywhere by just typing it in. An advantage for using text messages to interact with the show is that you don’t have to sign up for it and you won’t have to use Wi-Fi of data to send in answers.

Pointless Game Show

Title:

The title of game show is 'Pointless'. This word means having little or no sense, so from the title i can gather that the game show hasn't got much sense about something, that it is different compared to other game shows.

Title Sequence:

The show starts off with the host, who tells the audience a bit about the show, he says "Welcome to Pointless, the show where the aim of the game is to score as few points as you can and you do that by coming up with answers that no one else can think of". 

 

Next, the guests on the show are welcomed and the audience are told a bit about them. Each team has two people, they are normally partners, they each tell the audience about themselves saying their names and where they are from. The guests are then told the team with the highest score at the end of each round will be sent home.

 

Then, a category goes up on the screen such as numbers or cities etc. One person from each team has to go up to the podium meaning they will be taking the turn. Then, 7 clues go up on the screen and the first team has to choose one, they then have to give an answer trying to be as radnom as possible. After, they look at how many people have also said that answer it could be up to 100 or as low as 0, the lower the number the less you score which is good, becuase if you keep scoring hgih numbers then you will be sent home. If you get an answer wrong you get 100 points which means you are very likely to be sent home.

When there are only two teams left they go head to head in the semi final, they have two circles on their podiums and the first team to get both their lights lit up win, to get the lights lit up they have to get the lowest score. The team that wins goes into the final. To win the jackpot from the final which is a lot of money, they are given 4 categories to choose from, the one the choose has then got another 3 categories and the one they choose they have to give 3 answers. If one of those answers is pointless meaning 0 points they win the money. If they dont then the dont win the money and they just get a trophie.

 Rules of the show:

The rules of the show are that you have to get the answer right to get a low number and it has to be an asnwer that not many people have said before. If you score a lot of points you have to go home as you have failed. Another rules is that you cant ask for any help, and you cant speak to the other teams about any of the answers or questions as this would be seen as cheating.

Guest:

The type of people that are on the show can be anyone, the teams can be partners or friends or family, they can be from anywhere and have completely different jobs. The different teams wont know each other but they can have similiar backgrounds etc.

Audience:

When watching Pointless you dont get to see much of the audience but you can hear them laugh etc. The audience can be anyone, families, friends, partners, or people who just like the show and want to watch.

Host:

The show is hosted by a man called Alexander Armstrong, he is 46 years old, is married to Hannah Bronwen Snow and has three children. He is not only a host but is also a singer with an album names 'A year of songs'. From watching him host the show, i can gather that he is a funny person who isnt too strict, he makes a lot of jokes during the show and gets people more involved. 

My Opinion:

I like the show, it is different to others because instead of trying to score as many points as possible you have to score less points to win. I like it as it is interesting, however i do find the show confusing at times as a lot of it isn't explained in much detail meaning you have to figure a lot of it out by yourself, but never the less it is enjoyable to watch.

500 Questions Game Show

Title:

The game show is called 500 questions. This is an effective title because it is very simple and explains what the show is about, from the title i know that the people going on the show get asked a lot of questions, and they need to answer them correctly to win.

Title Sequence:

At the start of the game show, the host introduces two competitors to the audience, he tells everyone a bit about the two people such as where they have come from, their jobs, their names and then they are sent to opposite sides of the stage behind a table. Next, they are shown different catagories on the screen above them.

Then, the competitors are told that they have to answer 50 questions, they can choose from the different categories for every question and they have to try and answer as many questions correctly out of 50. Every question the player gets correct, they earn money. However, if the competitor gets three questions wrong in a row they get three crosses and they are out of the game and has to go home. Any money that they have won will be sent onto the other player and they will then have to try and answer 50 questions. And for each question asked they only have 5 seconds.

During the game, there can be traps. One of these traps is called a battle, this is where both players go head to head with each other to asnwer a question with multiple answers, the first person to get one wrong gets a red cross. Another trap is called triple threat, this is when the player has to answer a question with multiple correct answers, if they get them all correct they earn another £500 but if they get one wrong they get a cross. The last trap is called lightning, this is when the player gets answered quick fired questions.

When a player gets three questions in a row wrong and three crosses on the board they are sent home, the money they have earned goes to their opponent who then carries on their 50 questions and another player gets added in. The game carries on and if the player gets three crosses the game is carried on by the next player and so on.

The player that gets the 50th question right wins all of the money. They are then invited back onto the next show to carry on playing for a chance to win even more.

 Rules Of The Show:

The rules of the show are simple, if you get three answere wrong in a row, meaning you get three crosses you have to leave and you cant take any of the money home. Another rule is that you cant have any help from the audience with the answers as this would count as cheating.

Host:

The host of the game show 500 questions is a man named Dan Harris, he is age 45, married to Bianca Harris and has written many books such as Reduced stress without losing my edge. He has one child and was born in the United States.

Guest:

The people on the show are very random, they dont have anything in common and they dont know each other, they can come from all over the world and can have very different careers.

Audience:

The people who watch the show are obviously interested in game shows and quizes, the audience can be very mixed, people from different countries, people of different ages, friends and family of the guests on the show. The audience is also random and anyone can watch the game show.

Opinion:

My opinion on the game show 500 questions is that it is interesting, it is very different to other game shows becuase it isn't just against the same two people throughout and the winner comes back next episode. I like the show because it also has twists in it, like the traps, they are at unexpected times and there is more than just one, this makes it less boring to watch as it surprises you and the guests.

Mastermind Game Show

Title:

The title of the game show is 'Mastermind' this word means someone of a great intellect, they are a genius, very intelligent. This tells me and the audience that the game show is all abbout intelligence, and that the people that go onto the show have to answer hard questions or have to know a lot so they can win.

Title Sequence:

At the beggining of the show, you see four people sat in chairs next to each other, the host describes each person to the audeince, tells them their age, job, name and then says which topic they are going to be tested on.

Next, the first person on the row of chairs has to sit in front of the host in the Mastermind chair. They are then asked 2 minutes of questions on the topic they have chosen. For each question they answer correctly they earn themselves a point. After every person has been asked questions for 2 minutes they find out the numbers of questions they got correct.

Then, each person goes up to the matermind chair again to get quized on general knowledge questions that are completely random for 2 and a half minutes. The amount of questions they get right are added onto the points from before. The person with the most amount of points at the end go into the semi final.

The people in the semi final get quized again and the person with the most amount of points wins the mastermind glass and the title of the years mastermind.

The Rules:

The rules of the show are that you cant cheat with any of teh questions, so you are not allowed to bring any answers along with you or write them somewhere to get them all correct. You are also not allowed any help from anyone, you have to answer all the questions by yourself.

The Host:

Mastermind is hosted by a man named John Humphrys, who is an award winning Welsh broadcaster. From 1981 to 1987 he was the presenter of Nine o'clock News. Since then he has been a presenter on BBC Radio 4 programme 'Today'. He has had a reputation of being a very forthright character who has done tough interviews. He is now 73 years of age and was born in Cardiff, Wales.

Guest:

The people that come on the show have all different backgrounds, they are of different ages, they have different jobs and different appearances. The people on the show are completely random, they apply for it and then get quized, they aren't poeple that know each other and they can come from anywhere in the world. However one thing that they all have in common is that they have a lot of intellignece on a certain topic, and this topic is what they get quized on along with general knowledge.

Audience:

The audience on the show are also very random, they can be family members and friends coming to watch the people being quized or they can be people who like watching quizes, anyone can go and watch the show and it doesn't matter what age you are.

My Opinion:

My opinion on the show isnt great, i find it boring to watch as it isn't very entertaining. However this doesn't mean i think it is a bad show that shouldnt be on TV. I think that it is good to test people on things they know a lot abput and on thins they dont really know becuase intelligence is an important thing. There are a lot of game shows on TV, but this one is slightly different becuase it has a semi final and the prize isn't money which i think is a good thing becuase it shows that the people who go on there are generally doing it because they find a topic interesting and have learned a lot about it, not becuase they want the money.

Game shows

I don't really have much of an opinion on game shows becuase I don't watch them, I know of some such as 'count down' and 'pointless' but they don't entertain me for me to watch them regularly. However, even though I don't watch them, I do understand the concept of them, a group of people enter the game show and are split into teams, they are then asked a random question it could be about general knowledge or a certain subject like maths or English etc. And then one person from each team has to answer it and the person who answers it first or answers it correctly receive a point for their team. By the end of all the questions the team with the most points win a prize, the prize is normally a lot of money or a holiday etc. So a game show is a big competition with a host, teams, questions, and a prize. A lot of people like game shows as they like to try and guess the answers for themselves or they just like the idea of it, but for me I find them quite boring so I don't watch them unless I really have to.
